Dear Colleagues,
It is my pleasure to announce the Fifth Live
Surgery Course at the Leipzig Heart Center, a
biannual event featuring new surgical techniques
and established surgical concepts in the
hands of world expert surgeons.
Once again the focus will be on surgical techniques
that will be demonstrated during more
than 20 live surgeries.
This year`s topics include the latest developments
in Cardiac Surgery and Cardiology and
will focus on aortic surgery, aortic and mitral
valve surgery, atrial fi brillation, endovascular
techniques and imaging technology.
The rapid advance in catheter based valve
therapy will be refl ected in the program by a
number of live demonstrations including transapical
and transfemoral beating heart aortic
valve implantations.
Since enthusiasm for percutaneous coronary
interventions has been tempered by the results
of recent studies demonstrating increased mortality
for drug eluting stents, limited benefi t in
chronic occlusions and no benefi t over medical
therapy in stable angina patients, one session
will also highlight the state of the art in coronary
bypass surgery versus PCI.
Contrary to common belief it will be stressed
that CABG surgery continues to play an important
role provided that contemporary surgical
revascularization strategies are applied. We
have invited a very distinguished international
faculty and expect a stimulating and interactive
discussion beyond the technical aspects of
the case demonstrations.
The course will be held under the auspices of
the European Association of Cardiothoracic
Surgery and CME credits will be assigned. As
in the past, we will record the conduct of the
meeting and provide the complete format on
DVD for all registered attendees.
On behalf of my whole team, I would like to
welcome you to join this exciting program and
the enjoyable fl air of the city of Leipzig.
PS: Limited subsidized and free registration
will be possible for Eastern European and third
world countries participants.
Friedrich W. Mohr, Course Director
